How to get a free breast pump from your insurance

Hi mamas! We are often asked for advice on the best breast pump and pump accessories so we are excited to share this post with you today! We want all moms to feel like they can meet their breastfeeding goals and many times pumping can help with that! There are lots of reasons women choose to express and save their breastmilk – some are returning to work, some are dealing with unexpected complications or prematurity, others are just preparing for some mother-baby separation time.  Whatever the reason, we are here to help!  Expressing breastmilk through a combination of hand expression and using a breast pump can help maintain a good milk supply even mom and baby are separated.

As a labor and delivery RN and lactation specialist I know Moms have a lot of questions when it comes to pumping — “When should I start?”  “What’s the best time to pump?”  “What if I get more milk out of one side than the other?”  “How long is the milk good for?”  And so many more!  I answer all of these questions in my Pumping and Storing Breastmilk video class.  It’s a blueprint for how to maximize your milk output with each session and also how to safety store, thaw, and deliver breastmilk to your infant.  After you’ve taken that class, it’s a great idea to get your breast pump ordered.  Many companies allow you to order your pump as soon as your second trimester.  Below is an easy guide to getting your free breast pump through insurance.

dsc_0764Through the Affordable Care Act, breastfeeding supplies are covered by most insurance plans.  So, in most cases, you can get a double electric breastpump from your insurance for free! Even though it’s covered, some women don’t know they have that benefit or how to order it. We’ve done the homework for you so check out the steps below on how to get your free pump from your insurance!

Follow these steps to get a breastpump from your insurance…

  1. Visit 1Natural Way.  They’ve made the process super simple and have a wide selection of really great pumping accessories.
  2. Fill out their qualification form. Have your insurance card ready so you can upload a picture of it after filling out the form.
  3. 1Natural Way will determine your eligibility–meaning, they will find out if your insurance works with them. They will also determine if your insurance requires a co-pay for your pump (most don’t).
  4. You will then receive an email where you can select your breast pump style options – including an option to add on the Petunia Pickle Bottom pump bag.

  6. The pump ships to your door!

5 ways to keep up your milk supply when returning to work

Many Moms express concern about maintaining their milk supply when they return to work.  They are worried about not having time to express milk, being judged by co-workers, or feeling pressure to perform.  Here are a few ways to take the pressure off and increase your confidence that you can return to work and still keep your breastfeeding goals intact.

1 – Present a plan to your employer

Many managers respond favorably when they are informed before any changes take place. Scheduling a quick meeting before you take maternity leave may help with communication and confidence on both ends. You can communicate how long you plan to be on leave, your decision to breastfeed, time/space you’ll need to express your milk, and your enthusiasm to contribute to the department when you return! You can also share the information that breastfeeding mothers experience fewer sick days (1).  Employers that fall under the Fair Labor Standards Act are required to provide reasonable time and space for milk expression. You’ll also want to be aware of your state laws regarding breastfeeding and the workplace.

2 – Find a coworker

It is great to have a work buddy whose got your back…Or I guess your front in this case?! Connect with someone before maternity leave and talk to them about any pumping time you’ll need coverage for. Make sure they know you appreciate it by returning the favor when they need help!

3 – Use hands-on pumping

Make sure you are using a technique called hands-on pumping. I go into detail about this in my Pumping and Storing Breastmilk video class. It is a way to maximize your time using the pump. This is essential when you are at work and short on time.  It encourages more efficient milk removal and uses both compression and suction, as opposed to just suction when using the pump alone.

4 – Set an alarm for reminders to pump

When you get back to the hustle and bustle of the workplace, you get busy and you can forget to pump!  Some Moms think they can get away with pumping fewer times, just doing longer sessions. There is no substitute for frequent stimulation. It’s a good idea to do a hands-on pumping session every three hours when you’re at work.  Setting an alarm on your phone or computer helps you remember and not skip sessions!

5 – Frequency days when reunited with baby

When you’re reunited with baby, allow and encourage frequent breastfeeding sessions. These ‘frequency days’ will make up for any decreased stimulation by being separated from baby. Allowing cluster feeds at night and safe co-sleeping can help with ensuring adequate stimulation as well.
